Fully agree with first commentor, Tim W of AL. We "retired" to south TX 3.6 years ago, thinking we'd be better off moneywise than living in OK, where we'd each spent all of our respective lives. WRONG! Things cost more here -- period -- even BEFORE the economy went in the toilet.

Not if you want to own a house. TX gets a large chunk of its revenue from real estate taxes. These taxes are even higher near the metropolitan areas like Houston and D/FW.
