10 Resolutions for Retirement Readiness

Who's able to put $22k+/yr into a retirement plan and live? My employer doesn't match 401k contributions so what's a SINGLE person to do? Often, single workers are overlooked when finance gurus discuss savings and investments. I work for a company who gives certain employees vacation for one month, but, file unemployment for them so that they can get paid. The money that they pay into unemployment, they end up getting it back by saying that their employees have been laid off; it's a lie but it's legal.

very much depends on whose perspective I think. When I started saving and investing some years back the most important premise to us was that the market is transparent and accountable. Now that's no longer true we need to take any financial advises with a grain of salt. Saving more is our obligation to ourselves but how not to feed the beast that just bit us is a big challenge at least for me. What if the financial services industry does it again in the future ? There is no one so far being held accountable with jail term and regulations are being (again) drafted by special interest group. How much do our votes really count ? Apologies for being a bit pessimistic.

The economy of the United States has just been recently wrecked; all of the growth has gone back to the people that wrecked it. Unemployment at almost 12 percent; with all the bailouts, basically Americans are buying homes (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) but not living in them; buying cars (GM & Chrysler) but not driving them; paying for insurance (AIG) but not benefiting; add to that paying unemployment to people not to work; fighting wars that don't enhance our personal security; a person can't even afford to buy a pack of cigarettes to relieve his stress, taxes, taxes, taxes, and Washington still isn't finished. All of this doesn't even consider state and local government and their tax needs. But the FED prints money, and the government throws it at problems; and no one listens to me. Oh well, we can always hope for a quick death when the government takes over health care.

Nearly 60 and still at the office 5 days per week. But I leave at noon on Fridays, no longer travel, and no longer "lead the pack". Still earning 6 figures with the usual benefit package. I read all of these articles and have even seen a financial planner and by their figuring, I will have to work forever, till I drop. I then stand back and say: BS! With a net worth over $800k, ($600k in conservative IRA) and fairly decent SS checks coming our way a few years hence, I think we will manage. We will adjust. All that matters to us is that our health holds up.

When I retired 22 years ago, three financial planners advised me that I would be flat broke in 7 years. All assets would have been exhausted.

Actually, we have lived quite well spending 5/6 months in Florida, 1 month at a summer home in Michigan. Have made a trip to Australia and New Zealand and purchased 3 new Buicks. Still doing well. So much for the experts!!!!
