This article is useless. The title implies the article will detail ways of saving for retirement if you do not have a 401(k). All it did was make everyone without one feel even worse by telling them how little they have compared to the lucky ones.

You need an estimated $4 million if you were going to retire in the near future. Planning to retire without any money saved is like jumping out of a plane with a Cinder Block as a parachute. BUY THE MONEy, NOT THE HOUSE! Save the moneyz. INVEST!

A little easier perhaps; You just need to pay yourself first and live on what's left.

Darron,

I started saving for retirement when I was 21 yrs old -- I could only afford $25 per month, but it was a start. As I earned more I increased the amount I set aside, I bought used cars (my last new one was in 84); payments are lower, as is insurance. Over time I was able to just pay cash for a (used) car.

Take control of your spending ... now. Know what you earn and what you spend. Plan for your own future. You will be surprized at how liberating it is!

I am an actor and waiter who struggles to make my bills. Worrying about my retirement is something that is so out of my realm that I never even think about it. Surely in twenty years, it will jump up and bite me in the butt. I wish it was easier to have a 401(k) at any job.
