Gary Kunzer discovered Salt Lake City when Deluxe Corp. transferred him there in 1998. When he retired from his operations manager position in 2006 he decided to stick around rather than move back to his hometown of St. Paul, Minn. He now splits his time between a variety of part-time jobs including golf teacher, ski instructor, and sales. "When you go skiing in Salt Lake you are truly in the mountains and when you come down you are in a truly metro area," says Kunzer. "Skiing is probably the best family activity people can ever do: I have 3 daughters in their 20s and they won't always talk with me, but they always ski with me."

Check out these 10 affordable places to retire in the mountains:

There is a question below about retirement in Asheville NC, where I retired, having lived and worked in Princeton and in Boston for thirty years. A great little city, liberal by southern standards, walkable, affordable. Home to The Reuters Center, a center committed exclusively to a college for seniors, which offers several hundred weekly classes of a broad variety all year round. Cold in the winter; fairly hot in the summer, and a bit humid. I live near Asheville center in an 'expensive' area called Montford. three bedroom, two bathroom small craftsman cottage ($230k)

It would be really helpful to know what the criterion that was used to create this list. I live in Vermont and it is an VERY expensive state to live in so I'm not sure why it's on the list. It has a state income tax, state sales tax, HIGH property taxes and so on and so forth.
