New Mexico???? Beautiful yes....but N.M. is ONE of 12 S.W States that is in a PERMANENT state of drought! Water is going to be a big problem there in years to come. I've been to Santa Fe....VERY nice....but when the water runs out and your shower is a bottle of water and a dishcloth.....you'll wonder why you moved there....unless of course you want to pay VERY large sums of money for the water you use.....It's coming...do some homework before you commit to N.M.

We´ve been doing this for decades. The coasts are pristine, the people are international and the prices are affordable. My mother lives here on a stipend of Social Security in a beach front home, she built and owns outright. I retired at 39 and live out of a backpack anywhere I choose in Central America, ofcourse it helps to know Spanish in my case, but my mother can barely get the cable guy to understand her. Playa Junquillal is my favorite, check out Tierra Pacifica.

there is sport -football

what's not mentioned is to take classes means significant parking problems-- so be prepared to bike or walk long long distances

there is virtually very little theater or concert choices

medicial faciliities are not the best that is why the locals go to Gainsville or Jacksonville

there are a good supply of restraunt options

this from a resident

i would not recommend Tally as a retirement site -- it's a college and government town --- the focus is not for retirees

Southern Illinois Cartervill/Marion is a beautiful area many lakes and scenic surroundings with a University in the next town always a concert or seminar to go to. For a weekend trip Arkensas or Missouri is just an hour in a car. A small town a very reasonable to live in cost of living is way less then the Chicago land area so that is where I am going in two years. I know property taxes are low becasue I own a few acres there and it's cheap.Could never buy a few acres up in Chicago with my income.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned is health care. Many policies don't cover overseas illnesses nor medicare is many cases. Then too many of these countries do not have the specialists needed in some cases. Please consider this possible problem

Am 60 and became unemployed. Will be eligible for SS in 2012 and estimate that I will have approximately $1,000 a month in benefits. Living in Pittsburgh is inexpensive, but would like to find someplace with less of a winter to retire to. Any suggestions?

I moved to the Philippines 5 months ago at 67yrs of age .I live very comfortably on my $850.00 social security I will be getting married by the end of the year .to a wonderful woman that I met here .She has a 6 yr old daughter and we live well on my s.s.And I enjoy having a new family . And I already have had family from the USA visit even though we are 10.000miles apart The cost of living here is much cheaper than the USA and yes there are draw backs but you have drawbacks no matter where you live .There is a lot of poverty but people are happy with what little they have and are very friendly .But it also has many beautiful beaches and resorts for vacationing at a very reasonable price .And by the way Americans are very welcomed here and loved by most citizens of the country .

Obviously the author did not consider the cost of living. Madison Wisconsin will sap retiree's money in income tax and property tax. Re-invent yourself? Sure, as a home-bound retiree unable to afford much more than dog food.

I really wish these writers would do their research, look at the big picture. These stories written with blinders on serve no one. In fact they have great potential to hurt people.
