When you are old...you get no gold stars or extra points...you are just old. Too many people reach an advanced age and hang on and on...with no other purpose than making one more day...why?...get over it...being old is not fun, it is not good, there is no benefit to it...it just is what it is...so you do the best you can with it. the only people who write about the great so called golden years are those with substantial income that can afford to do what they want how they want...they are a very small minority. Most seniors just survive day to day...and tell them selves it is Ok...the USA is not designed for old people and never will be. When you can no longer amke the cut...yu are so much useless bagage that most people do not want to deal with. The Sr. communities are a joke...they are usually dumps or expensive...nothing in between. Why would you want to surround yourself with hundreds of people who are sickly, feeble, and set in their ways...they complain about everything and produce nothing....it is a poor choice and a worse existence.

i am still in the process of retiring, and i don't think i would like to move to a place where there are a lot of retirees who are single, who are too old, etc. among many other reasons (maybe it's nice at the beginning). but as years go by you will realize you will need to be around your kids and grandchildren for some reasons, you wanna see them, you want to interact with them or join your grandkids while they are still young. why seclude yourself from everybody else and stay alone? to me, being around different generations i will feel younger and secured in so many ways, whether it's your own children or not i am pretty sure somebody will be there to help you get up on your fall, on your food and among other things. just to hear/see children playing balls, running around, joking, etc. the environment feels more healthy. whereas, if you live with the other retirees who are your age or older, you hear them sick and lonely, it feels more like you are in a death row, your life is starting to slow down and telling you something that will scare you in so many ways. especially when you see/hear them disappear one by one, you will sense right away that you are getting there too. i am not afraid to die, we will all get there, so why not enjoy and make the most of it? do something that grandkids will enjoy it too, (your company, your stories in the old days, your experiences, your downfalls, stories about their parents, all the mischievous things that you have done in the pass, whether they are funny or not (these will teach/give them some moral lessons).

Try Cottonwood Arizona. Weather is temperate. Scenery is beautiful!

I live in a "normal" subdivision: ie, kids, teens, working parents, older people. I cannot imagine wanting to live only among one group, forever. I have an uncle in a Sun City subdivision, and he and his wife HATE it, regret moving in, but due to the housing crunch can't sell and get out.

If you do fit the WASP profile and your politics and religion are a bit to the right of center (or more than a bit!) and daily cocktails and barbecues (like the 1950's!) are your idea of a good way of life, then this may be for you. Otherwise.....you may not "fit in" in a community very much clique-ish as the above poster wrote.

I've also heard the "hate children/ hate pets" thing before. Kids may be able to visit, but apparently had better sit quietly indoors for fear of a neighbor's complaint. To me, life consists of all the variety of people, whether the same or different from me.

And the super low cost retirement community mentioned in Florida, I don't know about that one in particular but I do know some that advertise as "retirement communities" are just large mobile home parks. The mobile homes, of course, DEPRECIATE over time, not appreciate like most houses; and are hot in summer (unless you pay a fortune on ac) and cold in winter.

I don't think I could visualize myself in such a community, frankly. In some, and I'm very surprised the author did not mention this type: you sign over EVERYTHING for lifetime care. Of course, in the meantime, they've now "got you". We have such a community near us, and I've heard the elderly from there complain about the restrictions if they want to leave the compound.....er....grounds of the community. Their heirs get nothing of course, based on the chance the elderly person may need nursing home care at the end of life, which would be covered. There are other ways to cover this without signing yourself into a prison, in my opinion.

I love the change of seasons so living in a senior community in New Jersey is great. It is nice to go to the shops and meet folks from all walks of life and their families. New Jersey has 120 miles of coast with wonderful shore towns and historic sites. With New York City and Philadelphia close by one can partake of shows or four star restaruants if your taste runs to that. Our small senior community is self managed therefore we keep the dues low (under $60 per month) which include snow removal and lawn care. People here are wonderful always ready to help a neighbor. We pay under $2200 in property taxes yearly. New Jersey has every thing you want and unfortunately has been given a bad rap for years.

I'd like to retire to somewhere where it's not 110 in the summer. AZ sounds like hell on earth to me. Ca is expensive, so I don't want to stay here.

I've heard this kind of stuff above about Sun City from an Aunt who had friends there. They moved away as soon as they could afford to. It's a rip off, according to them - kind of like the show "The Prisoner." Beautiful - then they have you once you move there.

THE RCSC WASTES MONEY WITHOUT OVERSIGHT. THEY WILL NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO VOTE ON ISSUES. IF ANYONE GETS ELECTED TO THE BOARD AND DISAGREES WITH THEM, THEY WILL BE VOTED OFF. THE HOMES THERE ARE RUN DOWN AND OUTDATED INSIDE AND OUT. THEY HATE ANIMALS AND HAVE NO GREEN SPACE FOR DOGS. THEY HAVE NO POLICE DEPARTMENT, BUT HAVE WHAT IS CALLED A POSSE WHICH ARE VOLUNTEERS THAT CANNOT CARRY GUNS AND WORK UNTIL MIDNIGHT 6 DAYS A WEEK, BUT THEY DO HAVE A HOA THAT GOES THROUGH PEOPLES PROPERTIES WHEN THE OWNERS ARE AT HOME OR AWAY FROM HOME MAKING SURE THEIR OUTDATED RULES ARE FOLLOWED. THEY HATE CHILDREN, SO IF YOUR GRANDCHILDREN VISIT YOU WILL BE IN DANGER OF A NEIGHBOR REPORTING YOU TO THE HOA. (THEY HATE CHILDREN). PARK A CAR OR TRUCK IN THE STREET, THEY HAVE PEOPLE WITH STOPWATCHES WAITING TO TURN YOU IN. THEY WANT EVERYTHING TO BE THE SAME AS IT WAS 50 YEARS AGO AND IF SUGGEST A BETTERMENT YOU WILL BE LOOKED UPON AS A TROUBLEMAKER THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE ANY OF THEIR FACILITIES. THEY WILL BAN YOU EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE PAID FOR THEM. THEY HATE BOOMERS, THEIR IDEAS, THEIR BELIEFS, THEIR RELIGION, THEIR RACE. UNLESS YOU ARE 100% CHRISTIAN, YOU WILL BE LOOKED DOWN UPON.

WHAT ABOUT FLORIDA, I LIVE IN DELRAY BEACH, IN SUNNY FLORIDA, AND IT IS LOADED WITH RETIREES. WE HAVE TENNIS GOLF AND MANY MORE SPORTS, AND ACTIVITEES. THERE ARE CHEAP AND EXPENSIVE PLACES TO EAT, WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO IS HERE. CHEAP TAXES, UNLESS YOU LIVE IN A HIGH PRICE AREA. CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT FLORIDA, FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH.

Until the RCSC board reinstates the rights of the people whom they have stripped away and double assessed due to not being married and held joint title, buyer beware.

They will double assess you for your recreation rights, if you are not married and live together. They are stripping away layers and layers of citizens rights that are guarenteed by the articles of incorporation which the board does NOT follow.

Sun City will soon be as expensive to live in as other adult communities that do not discriminate against Domestic Partners, Non Married individuals, and the like.

The community is going down hill and fast with it's leaders and politics who wont allow the people to vote on issues that we are guarenteed to do in the articles of incorporation. They change bylaws, double assess, and discriminate.

Buyer Beware.

My husband and I built a home in a beautiful neighborhood in Harrison 4 years ago. Our house is for sale and we can't wait to get out! If your grandfather was not a local judge you will never be accepted by the local Socialites. If you try to volunteer you are told they have plenty of people right now. The county is SO redneck, but this November they did go "wet" and we won't have to drive to the MO. state line for a bottle of wine. Walmart is about the only place to shop.
