Cathedral City, Ca, I live here and unless you think you can handle the desert don't come. If you've lived in a place or places that have seasons Cathedral City can be very difficult to adjust to

Dengue fever, malaria, high infant mortality rate 37%, life expectancy not so great (most retirees would have already outlived their life expectancy), very few hospitals, expensive cost of living OTHER than housing - but a very beautiful country.

Guyana is it where you can live for less than $100. a month. eat the best, wear the best, drive the best and the people are the best in the world.

Tom, I gotta respectfully disagree with you here. Crime rates in 2010 were lower than 2009, and 2009 was lower than 2008. I would call that a falling crime rate, not a growing one. Can't argue with the traffic though, it is pretty congested.

With the 2nd highest state high income tax rates in the nation combined with high business taxes and an anti-business state government, companies and jobs are moving out of Oregon faster than ever before. Just wait a while, the prices of houses will be very cheap in a couple of years.

If you set your sights on Portland, do consider residing in the 'burbs in Clackamas or Washington county. Multnomah county (where most of Portland proper is located) is choc-a-bloc with the kind of socio-political liberals who made places like San Francisco so expensive to live in. Fact: Multnomah county was the only county in the area to impose an additional income tax levy (it was voted down two years later) on its residents. This in a state that already taxes most of its residents at 9 percent!

I sure wouldn't agree with St. Charles as being a good area to retire. It is close to DC but it does have it's problems. Crime rate is high and growing. Traffic is bad. Definitely not a place I would ever want to live

The 3D Center of Art and Photography, in Portland, is the only place like it in the Western Hemisphere and is free, on 'First Thursdays'. I should know. I'm one of the founding members of the board of directors of this 'not for profit'.

I leave here and I can definitely tell you that home prices have declined very little for the majority of homes. The greatest decrease in value would be the MacMansions that sprouted up in select areas, but under no circumstances have I seen an 88% decline. That is just NUTS!

Unbelievable. I live near Cathedral City. Average homes were $1,000,000+ in 2009. Maybe in pesos not U S dollars.
