I live in NEWTON,MA and find the house prices are high because of "elite" large lot zoning... but because BOSTON is surrounded by so many towns and cities from the 18th and 19th century .. there are many opportunites to live in the metro area that are less expensive... just move a few miles... that is what makes Boston so interesting..

Florida should be considered by anyone with any sizable assets. It is the best asset protection state in the US. Home equity, retirement funds, life insurance, annuities and more are all protected against creditors by the state's constitution. There is no personal state income tax. So you save on taxes when you make it, and state laws help you keep it. Prices on great properties are low right now and you already know the other reasons the state is attractive. How can the places in this article compare?

It is always amazing that the smaller towns are over looked like Auburn Kentucky

It is well situtated close to a college town, Nashville, Land between the Lakes and for military retirees a short distance to Fort Campbell and Fort Knox. A laid back community that does not take itself too seriously but has excellent community spirit. With something for all from sports to horses, to farming.

Clearly, Mike Hayes of PA doesn't know how to be gracious. I fully understood the meaning of Ms. Larner's comment, which, I believe, was not intended to be in any way offensive. I dare to say there are many of us retirees who agree with her attempts to enjoy retirement on a limited income, with similar "frugal" life styles. Good for her!"

Pleasant year round climate (no snow, no high humidity, no bugs, no beastly heat); walk to stores, restaurants, theaters, aquarium, harbor, beach; boating & sailing, cruise to Catalina & Mexico; and close to all the amenities of Los Angeles. Beach front condos available from $500K.

Clearly Ms. Larner doesn't know what the work "spendthrift" means. The editor should have informed her before publishing the quote in order to offer her the opportunity to amend her statement. It was unkind not to have done so.
