Good ideas and food for thoughts. Also there were good "readers comments" and positive contributions (sans complainers).

The article should include interviews with real people and how they "make it work" on mostly Soc Sec. What is the lifestyle of those who can have a "quality" life on just Soc Sec? What part of the country are they at? We're not talking about living paycheck to paycheck and spending beyond what makes sense. Even the "wealthy" can get themselves in a bind by living beyond their means. It has to do with being "smart" about managing oneself, regardless of income.

A car that flaunts a certain lifestyle vs. one just for transportation.

Cable television vs. free DTV or internet TV.

$1000 workout machine vs. walking, biking, running

There are readers who have been able to make it work living overseas. They have a "full life" on very little dollars. That's something touched on by other Yahoo articles. Naturally they have an interest in other culture and aren't afraid to make "small talk" with strangers.

10 Ways Retire on Social Security Alone (RRA)

This con article is just another gimmick to steal from folks who worked hard, and those that are still working. Follow this advice and wind up with nothing.

I live just outside of Boquete, Panama - about half an hour away, in the highlands of Panama up near the Costa Rican border.I Have lived here for almost 7 years , have run businesses here, learnt spanish and am involved with both the local expat and Panamanian communities. We get a lot of new people from the USA and Canada looking to move here every week. That is because the cost of living here is so much less than the US and the climate is generally wonderful ( ok not now in OCTOBER - its the rainy season!) ...BUT having said that, my advice, to all interested in living/retiring overseas is to come visit , rent a place for at least 6 months, get to know the community.I love it here but it is not for everyone and there are challenges.

I think that some of the people that get SSI get it because they are to lazy to work...and no one check them out to see if they need it or not...

I get less than $700 a month and you want us to have new car and a house to live in...when you have to sell every thing that you have were are you to live...one child wants to pay rent and the other doesnt...but you are still a lone...you dont have friend or anyone that you can get any help...the car places want to charge to much to get your car fix so it will last a few more years...and you have to may payment on it...and you have a student loan that you have to pay back too...they have no mercy on you...so after I pay my insurance on my health and car...and student loan..I have no more that $300 to live on...and on top of that they wont hire anyone that will work hard for them...they want young people that all they want is the money but will not put out the work for it...you think about the way you treat us older people and start looking around...because most of us is homeless?????

Be careful about moving to Florida to live just on SS. Record hurricane years 2004/2005 caused homeowners and flood insurance to go through the roof. Caused many on a fixed income out of their homes, some through foreclosure. Now it's "sinkhole" insurance. Rates up 2000% in some areas. It's crazy.

The locations in the side-article on where to live on SS alone are misleading. Most are small college towns where the 'average income' is distorted by the student population. Of course, if your kids will pay your tuition and you are happy living in the dorm, this could be a great retirement plan!
