Companies with the Most Older Workers

We need alot more companies who are willing to ivest in the older worker. Not all of us who are single/O and 55+ (babyboomers see the defintion) have the option to take early retirement.

I difference is that some industries may try to retain older workers but I can't think of one that considers it an advantage in new hires.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could retire. A depressed stock market, secure investments paying less than the cost of inflation, dead real estate, real threats to social security reductions - all characteristics of the retirement income scenario that baby boomers face.

What comes around goes around it really does. I know it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel sometimes when you are in the throes of "evil" but big changes coming soon.

I've been watching the demographics for years and folks the global economy has a serious problem now, not enough young ones!

Even countries we think of as big breeders, such as Mexico have a serious problem with aging workforce going on right now...

It will come back to bite the employers in the arse... And, GenX not so young themselves and already reached the "dangerous age" called older worker themselves.

I know what you mean about the hostile work environment. But what cracks me up the most is I am 58 and the ones who are the worst offenders in the office are both age 50.. I guess they think they are REALLY young or something but it just makes me laugh..

Everything that goes around does come around.

As a new "retiree" who never thought of retiring until this year, I could write books about age discrimination and dirty tricks and office / shop "politics" that are used daily to shove older people out.

The highly skilled and experienced people are vital to a company's success, yet they are the very same people who are targets by younger bosses, Human Resources (this is a bizarre situation ..where I worked many years, our HR department "evolved" into an all-woman and minority country club that aggressively dropped in younger people who fit into affirmative action slots .. and experienced people did the training).

Soon the experienced person was "not being a good team member", "not following company policy" (because the rules were being changed every month), "not producing enough" (because of training all the new people), "has an attitude problem" (working for a 25 year old "boss" is very stressful), etc.

Hundreds more "shove 'em out the door" tactics were used to break down the older person. There were heart attacks, nervous breakdowns, major depression, from the daily "when you oldies gonna retire ? .. we need the jobs, you don't" verbal abuse.

This is the reality for many older employees .. that is why I finally left.

Hostile work environment.

So true. There is no doubt about it!

I know far too many people who have been passed over for work in favor of a younger, less-experienced person. Why?

The impression most companies have is that the older worker will take up far more of the insurance and other resources available, while only providing a limited number of years of return on investment IN that older worker.

At the U.S. Postal Service, 49% of the employees are over 50. That's way more than any of these Fortune 500 companies. Details are at Dead Tree Edition: http://deadtreeedition.blogspot.com/2011/06/its-official-postal-service-has-more.html.

The older generation has a strong work ethic, is skilled and well trained, has earned the right to work as long as they want and knows how to spell.
