I am already receiving social security benefits, but I read in your rules that I can claim on an ex-spouses work record if the marriage lasted @ least 10 yrs. We were Married for 17 yrs. Can I still claim on his work record, which is higher than mine?

A 67 year-old widow, who started collecting social security before her husband passed away,. now collects his ss because it was $500 higher . The widow still continues to work and eventually her own SS payment would catch up to what she is receiving under her deceased husband's. The widow's husband worked for an airline who had some kind of an agreement with the govt. whereby the pension to the widow would be cut according to how much of the difference between the widow's SS and the deceased husbands social security was.

She would normally receive $900 pension per month but because she's collecting $500 more under his SS, the pension is reduced $400.

Question: If the widow collected her own SS, would she be able to collect the full pension of her husband? Does she have to collect under the higher SS?

We collected two SS checks and my husband's pension. Now there is one SS and a $300 pension. Thank you for any help.

I went to the Social Security at age 62 and was and had been working for many years. At the time I spoke with a person who was to guide me through the retirement process gave me so wrong information and I ended up still paying back the money that I had made because she did not give me correct information. Seems to me of course we should understand how social security works, however I miss understood the retirement information but she should have know I was not to apply for social security due to having made to much for the year. So now I am 70 and making less than I should and living less than I should. It seems you work most of your life and pay into social security all your life and you still get the wrong end of the stick. Our goverment at work for us.
