The 10 Best Places to Retire in 2012

People looking for a decent climate for their retirement are missing one of the best areas. We have lived in Hawthorne, California since 1960 and find that the climate here is superior to any of the others we have found on the internet. Summer temperatures are in the mid 70's most of the time and in the low 60's during the winter. We have the nice cool ocean breeze that keeps the summer temperature in the mid 70's. This year our high for the summer was in the low 90's for less than a week. Everything we need is close by and we do not have to drive far to get anything we need.

Is Portland Oregon a good place to retire

@PAT of Pittsburgh. You highlight a big problem for the Pittsburgh area. I am starting research for making my upcoming retirement choices. Growing up western PA and having lived in the 'Burgh for many years, this article caught my attention.

After looking at several properties, I was amazed that the recently adjusted real estate taxes are, in many cases, much higher than what I pay on shoreline CT - for lesser quality properties. In spite of the wonderful city and area, both Pittsburgh and the state must get their act together if they want to be a financially viable destination for younger people, much less retirees. I started this exercise thinking I could move to a moderately priced location. What an unfortunate surprise.

A lot a people move to Florida because think think its warm. The truth is it's only warm a couple of months out of the year, and hot and humid most of the time. From 1980-2008 more people moved out of Florida than the entire population of New Jersey. It's a tread mill of people moving in for paradise and moving out after realizing it was just a mirage. There are places that are best places to live that will increase your chances of a successful move, but they usually are not the ones on theses lists.

We live in Pittsburgh...have been here for 6 years. It's a GREAT place to live...warm friendly people...great medical community, more culture than you can believe with museums, art galleries, symphony, ballet, broadway shows, opera, plays, parks, sports, etc., etc. BUT...the property taxes are through the roof & going higher because of unfunded pension liabilities for the state employees pension system. Our property taxes (school, municipality, county) will be up 44% next year from when we bought our reasonably priced home in 2006. Very regretfully, we will probably make the very tough decision to relocate as we have no reason to stay here - retired & no family in the area.

Lived in San Diego 1977 to 1989, until the smog rolled down from Los Angeles. Great place to raise kids in the 70's until tax reform closed the libraries down to just a few days a week and public school standards fell considerably in the 80's. Free beaches, clean ocean, plenty of parking and access to shore. Long walks to watch the sun set were our favorite activity. Would love to return to retire if only I didn't need to inhale the smog and the cost of everything hadn't gone sky high. Happy memories of paradise on earth, Sunny San Diego.

Yes, Santa Fe is nice, but very pricey. We lived in Rio Rancho, very laid back and not too pricey. About an hours drive to SF.
