This is very good article. But if you have any health issues, forget all the above. As our medical system will, it will suck you dry.!!No matter how you saved over the years. this has to be address, or very few people will have any money left when they are 65 yrs old.

hahahaha! Was this written by a government worker? Retire as soon as you can. If you wait until you're seventy, there's a good chance you win't see a dime and a pretty good one you'll be dead. We are all just one drunk driver away from death when we drive.

If you want, you can retire at 62 and still make about 5k a year. Downsize your housing, live simply, and pursue your own goals NOT locked into a job you've had for years. Volunteer and give back to your community. There are lots of fulfilling jobs to be done by volunteers.

A very good artical and true but I have to say that most people do not retire just for the sake of retiring,,I worked for a company that employed 480 people not one person was happy whent this place moved out of the country abt 47 were between the age of 59 to 71 most had been there for 10 to 45 years most would still be there to this day way past there retirement age,For some health reasons.for others it;s the only piece of bread comming there way the only way to make ends meet so have little to no choice, not every body can live off the state, and not everybody gets to live off the people of the United States with out worry where there next meal will come from or how there going to pay for there kids high class school or if they will get to go on vacation 5 fives in one year, unless all the american people stop working and take back from our country what we shell out on a regular weeky basis (and that would never happen we would be arrested put in prison for life) ,our jobs are no longer secure more and more are moving out of the country leaving the American people jobless, people who have dedicated there lives to there jobs and making a decent living, now have nothing left using there penisons and 401ks just to live and still not making ends meet emploment cks running out being treated like you camitted a crime because a company laid you off, Jobs there are tons but if you have no car no experence they dont want you if you have no GED they dont want you, even if you have 20 years exp, they don't want to train and do not want to pay decent but want everything in return including dedication People are living way up in there 80's but people have there reasons even thou, goverment is just worried about the cut backs they might have to take if we the people deside to stop putting in the pot so they can take out an use for them selves and families, and i dont think its right the goverment and all its officals unless they can live on what they deside we the people can live on, and live like, with out all the monies that they take from the people for there own benafits and retire at full age in order to get there medicare and full SS then they can talk about how us Americans should not be retiring till we are to old to even walk, retirement may not be fun but it is bread and butter when you have none and if I die before I get to use my own I am sure the goverment will have no problem adding it to the pot that feeds greeds,

I don't want to work any longer than possible. My free time means much more to me, even with a greatly reduced income, than working ever could.

For every extra year you work, it's one less year your investments have to cover? Duh. Do that until you die and it'll work our perfectly....for your heirs.

Good informative article Emily.

Thanks for the advice. But you left out the point that the Democrats have not passed a budget in the 4 years under Obama and that is because they do not want the public to know the impact of the deficit. Being $16 Trillion in Debt, it will be a good trick as to how the Government will find the money to pay Social Security and Medicare. Taxes will have to go up Jan 1st, 2013 and the Government will have to print more money which devalues the dollars they do pay for the debt. This also causes Inflated prices for everything, including Food.

So a major reason to remain at work as long as possible is to simply be able to eat.

Reason #10: You will live longer. It is a statistical fact that those who retire die sooner than those who do not.

I am so glad you are sharing this advise. The majority of Americans now live until their middle 80s. I don't want to be a burden to my family. I want to work as long as I can to cover my health care benefits and earn more retirement so that when I absoulely have to retire I have a higher benefit. People are crazy to throw away a good job, esp if they have benefits, so they can just sit at home and do nothing but be sick and broke. Get out of bed and get on the bus and plan on taking care of yourself. Your children and grandchildren will thank you.

WOW...WHERE ARE THESE COMPANIES THAT WANT OLDER WORKERS? I LOVED MY JOB..FOR OVER 25 YEARS. YET, THINGS CHANGED AS THE YEARS WENT BY. AS THE YOUNG WORKERS WERE HIRED...THE ATTITUDE WAS ..LET'S SEE WHAT NEW THINGS THEY HAVE TO OFFER. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE ALWAYS READY FOR NEW THINGS..OFTEN..TIMES WE WOULD BE LEFT OUT OF THE CIRCLE. PRIDE WAS A FACTOR FOR MANY OF US THAT DECIDED TO RETIRE. WE STILL HAD SO MANY YEARS TO GIVE TO THE COMPANY...THEY ALWAYS SEEMED TO WELCOME THE RETIRMENTS. I LOOK BACK AND NEVER REGRET MY DAYS WITH THE FIRM...I FELT VERY GOOD WHEN I HELPED CLIENTS REACH THEIR GOALS. THEIR FACES BRIGHTEN UP WHEN THEY CALLED TO TELL ME...I GOT THE JOB! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! I HAD TO HELP THEM REMOVE MANY BARRIERS..I DID LEAVE WITH ALOT OF PRIDE!
