Winner: A New Way of Life Reentry Project, Los Angeles

After breaking her own cycle of incarceration by getting a job and quitting drugs, Burton started an informal shelter for women recently released from jail. That turned into A New Way of Life Reentry Project in 2000. It now offers legal aid, job training, and other services, and runs five transitional residences that have served 600 women and their children.
