Nearly a third (32 percent) of Vanguard 401(k) plans now automatically sign workers up for retirement accounts unless they opt out, up from 20 percent in 2008. Plans with automatic enrollment tend to have higher participation, but lower savings rates due to the prevalent use of 3 percent as the default contribution amount. To try to fix this, 69 percent of plans with automatic enrollment also automatically increase the amount saved over time.
