The average Vanguard 401(k) plan offered 27 investment options in 2012, up from 16 in 2003, many of which were recently added target-date funds. The fund offerings of most 401(k) plans include equities, bonds, balanced funds and money market or stable value options. Despite all the choices, the average 401(k) participant uses three funds, and 43 percent use only one.
