Target-date funds are often the default investment when workers are automatically enrolled in 401(k) plans. Some 84 percent of 401(k) plans now offer target-date funds, up from 13 percent in 2004. And 58 percent of plan participants use target-date funds when they are offered, compared to 28 percent in 2008. Over a quarter (27 percent) of 401(k) participants invest using a single target-date fund.
