You can defer taxes on up to $17,500 in a 401(k) and $5,500 in an IRA in 2013, which jumps to $23,000 in a 401(k) and $6,500 in an IRA for those age 50 and older. Low-income workers who save in retirement accounts may also be able to claim the saver’s tax credit.
