English is the official language of this former British colony nestled between Mexico and Guatemala along the Caribbean Sea. And many restaurants and hotels will accept the U.S. dollar, which has a fixed rate of exchange for two Belize dollars. The country established a retired person's incentive program in 1999 that exempts from income tax foreigners age 45 and older who generate a monthly income of at least $2,000 outside the country. One caution: Several hundred dollars of application and other fees are required to get into the program.
