Ideal Locales for for Miltary Retirees.

Of the roughly 30 million Americans who have spent time in the armed forces, about two million are considered retired careerists—military officers and enlisted personnel who served at least 20 years, according to data provided by USAA and Military.com. Bert Sperling, head of Sperling’s BestPlaces, says the best places for military retirees shared several key characteristics: affordable living costs, stable and relatively healthy job markets, minimal boom-and-bust real estate activity, favorable tax structures, proximity to large universities, and convenient access to the shopping, support, and medical facilities of military bases and VA offices.
