Low unemployment and a strong job base in small- and mid-sized manufacturers are draws of this central Texas city. Fort Hood is about 50 miles away. Waco’s Baylor University, with more than 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students, is another plus for military retirees. The city also has a very affordable cost of living and nice older neighborhoods.
